Hi, your best bet would be to ask a breeder, soverenstaff (Julie) is one who is really helpful. I havent the first idea. Julie has done some blogs on different subjects relating to mating and pregnancy, so its worth a look on her page, and her blogs. Hope this helps.

first get your vet to do a progesterone test. that will determine when the bitch is ovulating/ready to ovulate/finished ovulating.
A.I if necessary.
there's a squillion staffies in pounds & shelters, if you are not a registered breeder breeding to improve the breed why not save a life instead of contributing to the problem?
i'm sure zeus wouldn't mind a pound hound for a buddy. |

I agree with kipmckool. Thats a very sensible suggestion. You should do a bit of research as to the number of dogs that get euthanised in pounds every year due to pet owners who...."just want one litter" or "think my dogs great so I want a litter with my neighbour" etc Also breeding is risky business if you don't know what you're doing. You might lose your girl in the process then end up with no dog and a huge vet's bill! |

I agree with you here in Belfast it is very difficult to get a staff from a breeder when i was looking for Duke we were searching for months no staff pups anywhere i was ready to go over to the mainland but this adds quite a bit to the initial cost of the pup. Any we saw at the pound had already been used as fighting dogs or badly abused we were scared to bring home as we have young children coming in all the time. But be careful get advice from your vet first. or check with the northern ireland sbt club they may be able to put you in touch with a breeder who is expecting pups that's what we did.

It's not always possible to get from a home anyway. We tried to get a staff from bath cats and dogs home but because we have young kids were told no because the staffys pasts were not known. we even ended up choosing to home a completely different dog, that was ok with kids. went in as arranged to walk it to be told he was no longer available as was going back to his owner. my partner was really upset, they said they'd ring us if any other child friendly dogs came in and we've heard nothing that was over ayear ago. on speaking to them they said to gegt a very young pup for best chace with kids. More measures should be taken to allow all breeds of dogs around kids since they are bound to be around a child at some point!

i can see from both side yes there are lots of staffs in pounds and with a rescue staff you cant be 100% sure of there temprementas you never really know how badly abused they were so going to a pound for another dog isnt always the solotuion. so in that situation isnt it better to breed from your own dog where you now the background and that all health checks have been done rather than line the pocket of some byb or puppy farm
if you are still thinking of breeding your girl i would by your self a copy of book of the bitch i found this very valuble before ,during and after my girls whelping when i mated my girl the stud owner came to me (although it is usally the other way round ) it was on saffys 11th day and a new she was ready as she was presenting her self and her tail was curled up high me and the stud owner just let them got on with it we supervised of course incase there was any aggresion but it went fine they tied for about 40 mins he then came back two days later and we did the same thing.good luck in which ever route you decide to take |

Hi i dont want to push anyone into Health testing but i must add it the best thing to do with any dog breeding. There are plenty of staffs in rescues & understand you are worried about the temp on them.its such a pity Breeding : Are you prepared to loose your bitch & the whole litter,or if the bitch dies are you prepared to rear the pups yourself(have you time) Have you got the costs if things dont go to plan, pet insurance does not cover pregnancies or anything to do with them,so make sure you have from £600 -£1000+ spare cash before her term date. You must help with the whelping & not leave her alone to do it herself incase things go wronge, you must also know what to do in an emergency if you are fine with these then go ahead & goodluck, get the (book of the bitch) its a must & read it loads
My Ellie will only accept a male on the 12 - 13 - 14 days of her season & so does Misty, stella will go from the 11th day,but some bitches will go alot earlier or later, your male should know when she is in prime time & yes all my girls have to be restrained as most staffords do |
