I use treats to reward when stanlie comes back i find using an exciting voice upbeat makes him come back. and i also say whats this n he knows that means treat so he 9/10 times comes back hope that helps.x

If you start doing some training indoors or the garden you should see some better results outside.

Have two of you, a few metres apart - one with a toy/treats/whatever your pooch loves and the other one holds onto pooch. The one with the treats, etc calls the dog in an exciting high pitch voice with their arms open and once pooch gets to them, reward with treat. Keep doing this over and over.

You can also add the command "come" into the equation once pooch understands what is happening.

Good luck, I have found this the hardest thing to teach my dog.

i found a tracker training lead, about £2.50 from a pet shop works well as well.
and never call back just to go home or put back on the lead, cus she will always know its time go home and not come back to you ,so call back at all diff times and reward.

my dog trainer gave us a few tips on this. she said that always use and overlly excited voice so the dog doesnt think its in trouble. use a different treat that you use only for recall. and if you get them to come back before you have to leave then they wont associate recall with hometime.

if your dog isnt wanting to come back for treats and is more into toys take a toy that you only use for recall and they really like. perhaps squeaky.

as RRR said its best to o in your own home. and constant. over and over so they know exactly what they are meant to do before doing it when out.
goodluck!!! its a tricky one!!!

I can sympathise with this one! Lilia can be brilliant or rubbish nothing inbetween. I have started taking treats, squeaky and a tug toy out with me. So she is never sure what she is going to get and make your self interesting/exciting. I always call her in a high pitched voice! I sound like a mad woman but it usually gets results.

My trainer said that When your dog starts coming back to you on his own accord call him and reward him for coming back. Keep changing directions when you are out walking and your dog is off the lead (this works a treat because Lilia is always looking back to see where i am now) even if it back tracking on yourself or going off to the left or right. The other trick is to run off in the opposite direction  making a noise and flapping your arms about - this worked for me with Lilia when we met a horse! Also as said before practise it in your house/garden.

I have struggled with this command but now Lilia is a lot better.
Good luck

i have the same problem with bailey so what i did is bought a 50ft lead so he can run around and have his freedom and i still have controll if recall doesnt work.  like tractorgirl said reward when they come back on own innitiative aswell as it will reinforce the training.. best of luck

i agree with most of what is said hear i am using a 50ft training lead to try to acheive recall we have been advised a high excitable voice while slapping thighs or open arms sit and reward when she returns the thing is we are wanting her to recall to whistle so we are using high excitable voice then whistle sit then treat on return dont know if this helps but she seems to pay more attention to the training whstle than to the calling

You've got to be more exciting than anything else that's likely to distract her - hence all the excitable, happy voices!!!  One thing to remember is that if she doesn't come back when you call her and it takes you an age to get her back - always, always praise her for coming back - even if you're feeling like throttling her.  If you scold her or get ratty when she comes back, it's just going to make her feel that coming back to you isn't a good thing so she'd be less likely to come back again.  Also, don't always put her back on her lead immediately - again, that can make her feel like coming back to you means the fun's over and the lead goes back on.  I call Cairo back just to give him a fuss or a treat then let him go off again.  You can also try putting the lead on for a few minutes then letting her off again just so that she realises that coming back isn't the end of the fun.  If she's toy orientated, and there's two of you, throw the toy back and forth, get her to bring the toy to you, throw it again, etc.  You want her to know that coming back to you when called is a really brilliant thing.

mattie wrote        I will also join 2 or 3 long lines to give a much further distance to
call her from, this is when the whistle is best, many dogs will recall
better to a whistle than a voice.

i was goin to stick eith the 50ft trainer will this be long enough?

It depends on how many distractions there are, lots of dogs running round, bunnies popping their heads up etc I would join at least another line but if there are vitually no distractons and the field is fuly enclosed, then just the one.

The idea is for your dog not to learn he can't come back, once through the teenage hooligan stage, there isn't the incentive to ignore their owner.

I have a touring caravan and go all over the country in it so my dogs are always running in places Idon't know, in these cases I will still put a long line on for safety.

well if your ever in kendal area pop in for a brew :)
