My friend's dogs are normally outside during the day and her husband did a dog house for them - I had a preconceived idea of what a kennel would look like but geez, this was Puppingham Palace! It was more like a shed (in height and size) and he used polystyrene insulation blocks then panelled it out so that it was kind of like cavity wall insulating in it! Roofing felt for the roof and, depending on how big the door is, a bit of carpet on the inside of the doorway so that the dog could come and go and the carpet would act like a door - if you know what I mean. Personally, I'd put something on the floor for added cosiness - like a bit of carpet along with some bedding. My ex's doberman was an outside during the day dog too but he just had a normal dog kennel which was filled with straw and had the bit of carpet over the doorway - but he kinda smelled of straw when he came in at night.

Oh, and I'd raise it up off the ground a bit so that air can circulate.
