To Get another Dog or Not?

Until recently we've been a 2 Staffie family.A couple of months ago we lost Jeddy to Cancer.

Im now toying with getting Tommy a friend.Since becoming an only dog Tom seems to have coped well.He laps up all the attention and gets to come more places with me.I do wonder though if he misses K9 company,he doesn't seem to but it plays on my mind a bit that he's lonely. When I used to walk the 2 I used to get a bit of Dog aggression from the pair of them but that aggression seems to have scaled right down with Tom alone. He seems to only dislike Black Dogs at the moment (which is odd cos Jed was mostly Black ) When he meets other dogs now hes pretty non plussed,he'll have a sniff then ignore them.We meet a Jack Russell at the Pub that he lets climb all over him and doesnt react what so ever.

So I suppose the question is do you think he missed Doggie company? Is it better for the Dog to have a friend or dont they really care?

I think staffys are more people dogs than  doggie dogs but I personally always think its nice to have one of your own kind . Its really your decision-I think whichever way you go he will be happy-hes always had another dog for company so is used to that but if you dont feel you can cope with another staff I think he will still be happy.
Ive not really helped have I hun .

We had the same dilema before adopting milly, bruno had been on his own for 6 years but as he seemed to get older he looked so sad. He has always been great at the park and off lead with other dogs, so we decided to get him a friend. He took to milly staright away and he certainly has a spring back in his step, he parades at the top of our steps out the back showing her off to everyone it is sure funny to see.

But everyone to there own and I guess you will have to make the decision, but best of luck.

p.s. i prob confused you more

I think if he was craving dog company, he must be hauling and whining if you leave himself at home and look for another dog you lost. - that happened to my mother -n- law's cocker spaniel.he couldn't accept his mate Cassy was past away-

Seems your dog took the situation well and accepted he's the only dog at home at the moment. As cazrob says staffys are more human orientated more than to dogs, so as long as he's getting plenty of attention off you  I don't think he's bothered about that, but of course, if you feels adding another dog to your family is right , why not??

Hiya.
From how you have explained your situation, i feel that you have answered your own question. You have said lots of things that have become more positive since Tommy has been the only dog - less aggression, goes more places with you, lapping up the attention etc. It seems to me that Tommy sounds very happy as he is, at the moment anyway, and you are the one maybe missing the company of two dogs?? Cazrob is right staffies love the company of people so dont feel that he is missing out he still gets to have doggy company when you walk him and go places. I could understand if he was pining for Jeddy, mine pine for eachother when they have gone somewhere without eachother, like the vets etc., Lily is the only one that has ever been on her own until she was 18mths when we got Ruby. I think if i took my other girls away from her now she would definately become withdrawn and miss them terribly.

At the end of the day you know your own dog and if you feel that he is becoming depressed or not interested in walks, food etc, then he may be missing the company and you should consider another companion for him. A couple of months isnt very long so give Tommy and yourself some time to come to terms with your loss, as your dogs mean a great deal to you and it is obvious you love Tommy very much. Good luck with your decision x
