Hi all I am hoping for a little advise. I have 2 staffies & my girl is pregnant due in about 2 weeks. I have lots of ppl at work who breed dogs & am getting lots of advise (much of which scares the living daylights out of me) but my question at the moment is more to do with how to handle our expectant dad.

He is a very love sick male he cannot be away from Sade for more than a few minutes. If they are seperated for long he constantly searches for her crying all the time. As she is very pregnant she doesnt to play but he doesnt understand this & she ends up snapping at him and a big fight ensues.

Can any1 offer some solutions so that he can be around her but not (if you get what I mean) the only thing we can think of is putting her in a large carrier cage that way he can see her & be close but not get to her to annoy her.

Suggestions have also been made about using a large cage for her as a whelping box?????? any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is our first time as well as hers

Hi try putting up a baby gate you may have a friend you can borrow one from that will allow him to see her but not be able to get to her i have gates and they work great if needed. A whelping box is best try asking your work buddys if they have one this way its not so easy for mum to accidently squash a pup.

Go to birth.htm and whelping.htm have a read i put someone the other day onto these sites as there easy to understand for the novice.

hi... when we breed our last bitch we used a puppie pen its just an over sized play pen but made of metal like the large carry cages... it was very good as our bitch let our male close to her and kept him at arms length from the babies and she didnt feel at all threatened by him.. its worth a look on Ebay... hope this helps as its a shame to keep them apart when they are so close.

cant offer much advice on keeping the male  away from your girl but my stafford saffy has just had pups and i found this great site on ebay called petnapltd they have whelping boxes heat pads and they even do a whelping kit that contains lots of usefull things for when the pups come along.....

plus make sure you have plenty of newspaper for when the time comes and after as its amazing how much they get through

HI WELL,SNAP MY GIRL LUCY AND MY BOY CRACKER LIVE,SLEEP AND EAT TOGETHER SO WHEN LUCY HAD HER LITTER WE TRANSFORMED THE BIG CUPBOARD UNDER THE SATIRS INTO A COSY ROOM FOR LUCY TO HAVE HER BABIES AND PUT A BABY GATE SO THEY COULD SEE AND TOUCH EACH OTHER BUT CRACKER COULD NOT ITERFERE WITH HER PUPS,I THINK LUCY NEEDED SOME REASSUREANCE THAT HER BOY MATE WAS CLOSE ENOUGH FOR HER TO NOT FEEL ALONE.YOU SEE CRACKER WAS NOT THE FATHER SO SHE DID NOT WANT HIM NEAR HER BABIES.I THINK YOU SHOULD CONSIDER SEPERATING THEM NOW SO THAT BY THE TIME THE PUPS ARRIVE SHE WILL BE SETTLED AND YOUR BOY WILL HAVE GOT USED TO THE FACT THAT YOUR GIRL HAS NOT GONE AWAY.HOPE THIS HELPS YOU.GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR FUTURE LITTER.XLISAX.
