hi all

I have an 8 month old bitch. I was wondering when she will have her first season, how long will it last and how often will she come into season.

Next question.

What can I expect to happen. I've never owned a bitch before.

Hope you can help.

Hi Chrissy,

I am no expert on this as Lola is not only my first bitch but my first dog full stop!

What I do know though is that they are all different so the age they come into season varies a lot.  Lola came on last week at 6.5 months old but I have heard of it earlier and also later than this.

Again, with how long for, I think this varies too but on average it's approx 2 weeks...

What to expect....... I'll be honest and say that I didn't expect it to be quite so heavy, then there are the way their bits swell (I read a quote on here where somebody described it as swelling up like a baboon's behind - spot on :).  Lola is also more clingy than normal but I'm not sure if that is just a co-incidence.

As for how often - I always thought it was every 6 months but I have read different to this on here too so I can't really help you with that.  I'll be having Lola spayed in January I won't be going through another :)

Hope this helps... x

Hello Chrissy,  you won't believe that my girl Muffin has come into season today! She is almost 8 months so the ages of bitches coming into season vary.  The length of the season is around 3 weeks (but again this could vary and also first season will probably last less. Wishful thinking! lol).

I have been watching Muffin since she turned 6 months and over the last few days I have noticed that her little bits at the back have become bigger.  I also have a boy (11 months) and he has been sniffing around her a lot more than before, so that was a giveawa :-).   Muffin discharge wasn't much this morning but when I left to work and she walked to her cage she was dripping a bit (the poor angel).

I can only say that I can't wait for the next 3 weeks to pass and after that little Muffin won't have another season!

Good luck! Elena

Hi all

Thanks for your insights. Blimey it all sounds very gruesome. I was thinking of letting her have one litter. Now I'm not so sure I can cope with the mess lol. Will keep you posted as to what happens. Her lil bits are already swollen so I guess any day now. I am hoping I missed it as she has been cleaning herself a lot over the last few days. That could be wishful thinking tho .

Well my little bitch Luna  is 8 months on the 10 November and she has just started her first season like you i have never owned a bitch before.  I noticed last sunday a couple of brownish spots on the floor that had dried a bit like blood, by this wednesday she was dripping blood she is fine with it and my other staffie a neutred male is ok, he does try to hump her but most of the time they are just playing around and been flirty with each other.  I have a leather sofa and wooden floors of the dripping is not a problem I did try a pair of my little girls knickers and some of the pants you can buy but she just ripped them straight off, so here goes with the mop and sponge for the next 3 weeks I believe, the only down side is her sad face when she sees me taking Bullit to the park and she has to make do with the garden.  It true what is said though she looks like a little baboon.

hi,
well my last staff penny was rather strange and only had 1 season a year,we got her when she was 3 so she was pretty much cleaning up after herself, luky i know but she would also become rather sulkish and lay in her bed rather than on her cushion with the rest of the family, just goes to show how different dogs can be.
kyla is hitting past 6 months now,so im a wee bit like an eagle wiv her lol,but im definetly getting her done so itll be once and once only for us both
good luck with yours-x-
