My 10 month Staffie, Meg, often whines when in the car (we have had her 7 weeks and I was told by the previous owner that she whined in the car). We take her to different places to walk her so She has just about stopped when in my husband's car with him but is still at it when with me, in mine. I ignore her and it is usually better on the way back from the walks. Any ideas?

my girls exactly the same except she is 9 years old! Its a good idea to give them a good walk before a car journey (or before training them to get used to the car) this is because we all know what an anxious staffy is like full of energy! so ware her out really well first so she doesnt have as much "fight" in her. Take her on short journeys. Let her sit in the car without it running etc and get positive experiences like snacks etc in the car.

Good luck and stick at it

Stay calm and assertive! dont get mad in the car or she will associate it with bad things!

How does she travel, ie where.?  Jez is much more unselttled on he seat in her car harness, I think cos the seat is a bit narrow  for her she can't settle down properly.  But I've got a dog guard in the back of my small hatchback, and I usually put her in the boot with some things to chew on.  She's a lot happier there.  In fact, I've got a 1 hr 50 min drive with her tomorrow and I'm putting her in the boot.

Mind you, that said she won't get in our other car now - we have to lift her in - as that's the car we normally take her to the vets in!

I find with mine the back seat works perfect
The first day i got him had a 2 hour drive home he was only 8 weeks old at the time but he cried for about 15 mins then settled down.
but its like anything else with dogs it all about routine's, if the dog goes in the car every 3 to 4 month what can you expect?
try to make it a daily rountine. if i mention car to mine he starts wagging his tail gets really excited soon as he his in car lays down and only gets up when car stops
What ever you think you are!! you are better than that.

Thanks for the replies.
Meg goes in one of the cars most days. I'm interested about where she goes in which car. In my husband's car she goes in the boot as it is a MPV and there are rings he can clamp her to. In my car she is currently on the back seat attached to a seat belt. I think i am going to try a dog grill so she can go in the boot.

My two come in the car with me on almost every journey. Toby knows the routine, he knows that when we have done the school run we go to the beach or the park for an exercise period. As soon as Soph gets out of the car he starts to 'sing' getting louder and louder till we get to where we are going, he dosent stop till he gets out of the car. Once he's had his exercise he is perfectly quiet for the journey home. He only whines and sings when its exercise time lol I have to say it dosent matter where in the car he is - in the boot of the mpv or on the passenger seat - he knows where he is going and gets really excited about it.
