Ha ha that creased me, man after my own heart lol, but seriously i reckon they may here a slight commotion lol, and believe me where i live the gardens arnt that big and face onto one another,, im bloody sure it would end up in a row especially with the new neighbours ive got, they have already tried to start on a single mother friend of mine neghbour over nothing and they have about 3 of these bloody cats. So i can see a row ensuing, id just like to know where i stand legally when he starts screaming about his dead cat and taking me to court , bla bla bla Cat owners are normally like well cats can do what they want they must be allowed to do so. If i was a cat owner an willingly let my cat out i would have to expect that it could get run over or killed by a predator plain and simple, if i didnt want that i would keep them in doors. i mean have they not seen tom and jerry, lol. I'm going to warn you all before I start - this is gonna be one of my long winded epic posts!!
On my forum, we had the exact same situation. One of the guys was absolutely distraught because his Rottweiler got a hold of a cat and pretty much annhilated it. The Rottie was in his own garden, which had a 6 feet high wall round it. The dog was secure - no way he could get out, but cats being cats, and as we keep getting told, free spirits, one of the free spirits went into the Rottie's garden.
By good luck for the cat, the dog's owner heard the commotion, ran out and managed to get the dog off the cat. The cat was pretty mangled, but give him his due, he immediately went to the cat owners, full of apologies (dunno what for), offered to pay the vets bills, etc etc. I suppose understandably (if you like cats) the cat owners were most pissed off and angry and started to rant about how they wanted his dog put down and it was vicious, blah blah blah. If I remember correctly, the cat died and the guy passed the message on that he would pay for funeral costs etc. He really did go over and above what he needed to do.
In the end, the cat owners couldn't do anything because the cat was in the dog's garden, the dog was secure and therefore not out of control and when it comes down to it, the police aren't interested in dog on dog, dog on cat, cat on cat fights, etc. They're only interested if the dog savages a human.
And I know there are a lot of cat lovers out there, but I'm afraid I cannot stand the things. If my dogs were to go wandering through other people's gardens, shitting in their flower beds and lying on their car bonnets, the neighbours would go absolutely ape - but a cat? Oh, it's natural for them to roam. My mum's neighbour, who is two sandwiches short of a picnic, feeds every flippin cat in the neighbourhood and they're constantly in my mum's garden. We've got to cat check before we let the dogs out in case they get a hold of one (Cairo has this thing about chasing cats). Cairo did run up to mad woman's cat one day and pounce on it. I screamed at him to leave, which give him his due, he did, but the woman started screaming that she wanted Cairo put down for attacking her cat (he didn't actually touch it as such - just jumped on it). Now this is the woman who tells me that it's natural instinct for cats to kill birds (me and my brother had a big fight with her - she puts food out for the birds, then feeds cats and there is constantly a massacre in my mum's garden where the cats' have got a bird) - so I came back with the same answer - it's natural instict for dogs to chase cats.
Told ya I was gonna ramble.
I don't know if there is some way of cat proofing your garden so at least you can say you made some attempt at keeping them out. |

Exellent post alison,, as i suspected, i think legally because the cat entered my property they dont have a leg to stand on,, i mean that is mother nature at work,, cats hunt birds and dogs will hunt cats,, its the way its always been. Now if my dog jumped next doors fence and ran through there garden into their front room and killed their cat in front of them all eating their sunday dinner,, then im sure they may have some kind of a case. Exactly. If your dog was to go into somebody elses garden, then you are at fault but you can't control cats coming into yours. Fair enough, you can do your best to make sure that there are no cats in the garden before the dogs get out, you can keep an eye on your dogs to make sure that they don't get any cats that are there, but ultimately, there's nothing that a cat owner can do if their cat is on your property and it gets attacked.
You can get these cat repellant things - they omit a high pitched ultra sonic sound and it's supposed to deter cats - but it affects dogs too cos they can hear it - unless you can position it in such a way that the dogs won't set it off but really there's not much more you can do. |

Ive tried all those reppellent stuffs but to no avail,, im seriously thinking about planting a load of lillies next year as i know thay are toxic to cats,, sounds wicked i know but we are over run with them round here,, and the owners just dont give a rats. Maybe when a few of them start turning up dead the owners wont be as keen to give them a free reign. Rob |

I feel for you. My mum is in exactly the same boat with her mad neighbour. This woman spends over £35 a week on cat food - and she doesn't even own a cat! Not since it died - and we got the blame for that - she said Cairo jumping on it started it's epilepsy up and thats why it died. Nothing to do with it being 19 years old according to her.
My mum was wakened one night with the most horrific noise. She jacknifed out of bed wondering what was going on - the silly bat leaves her cat flap open and food in her hallway and there was only a squad of them fighting in her house!
My mum's got a CCTV camera and she says watching it is like something out of an Alfred Hitchcock film - cats converging from all directions!
And they're not even scared of the dogs! They stand up to the dogs and one of them attacks dogs and humans that are just walking past! |

Should be like an Alfred Hitchcock film where the cats bloody eat her,, like the birds lol. My lucky has always been a cat hater but ive personally seen cats like you describe that are possibly ferral and show no fear of dogs or humans. My Lucky was actually attacked by a nutjob cat that had form for attacking dogs,, you would have to see it with your own eyes to believe it,, a cat that was kicked off of the dog time after time but just kept coming back and launching itself at the dog,, maybe 7 times and then when it had had enough of the dog it attached itself to my leg with shorts on and blood was every where,,, sometimes cats have no fear from a dog at all. It got put down in the end because it started attacking children,, bloody owner should have had it sorted after the first attack but it went on for a few years,,, people would walk their dogs based on when the cat was out,,, madness.
