Hi Kayleigh, Colin again, I think It's a great idea for all bully breed owners to congragate at 10 Downing st., what a sight it would be. In Canada the hysteria surrounding bully breed dogs has reached a crescendo and It's no wonder. This is the title of a recent article that was on the front page of the Victoria Times Colonist in bold font "PIT BULL PACK BLAZES TRAIL OF VIOLENCE" can you belive it? The article was accompanied by a file photo of a, [to my way of thinking], very nice Pit Bull with cropped ears peering through a chain link fence. I was furious! The article was penned by Katie De Rosa a newbie reporter from Ottawa trying to make a name for herself on the west coast. This is a copy of the e-mail I rifled off to her in reply. Dear Katie, I am thourghly disgusted with your anti Pit Bull article "PIT BULL PACK BLAZES TRAIL OF VIOLENCE". Are you kidding? You wouldn't know a Pit Bull if it sat in your lap. The phrase Pit Bull is used to loosely describe any one of five breeds of dog. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Bull Terrier and the American Bulldog. The dogs you describe in your article have about as much incommon with a Pit Bull Dog as you have with a legitamate fairminded journalist [not much at all]. The dogs described are backyard bred curs. Poorly raised, poorly socialized, poorly trained mongrels that may or may not have blood from any of the five afformentioned Pit Bull breeds. Pit Bull dogs are happy, gregarious, people pleasing dogs. Their has never been one instance of a Canadian Kennel Club regestered Staffordshire Bull Terrier attacking a person, yet this wonderful breed and all other Pit Bull type dogs are banned in the province of Ontario due to "Breed Specific Legislation", the same type of legislation resently repeelled in the Netherlands for being ineffective in reducing the incedence of dog bites. Please don't pander to public anxiety and ignorance by promoting this kind of sensationalized missrepresentation of the Pit Bull breeds. In subsequent articles De Rosa seems to have toned down the anti Pit Bull retoric so it seems she may have got the message. As it turns out their was one idiot driving around the island and the lower mainland in a van, stoping off at local parks and allowing his mixed breed dogs, four in total, to get into it with other dogs and their owners. This happended eight times befor he was caught and had his dogs impounded. Hopefully the dogs can be retrained and adopted out to responsible familys. Thanks talk to you later!
Hi Kayleigh, Colin here, with regard to your inquiry "is their a long legged Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed"? Not that I know of. The original Stafford breed standard of 1935 called for a height of between 15 and 18 inches at the shoulder and a maximum weight of 38 pounds for dogs and 34 pounds for bitches. In 1948 the standard was revised calling for a height of between 14 and 16 inches at the shoulder with the weight remaining the same. Weight should correspond to height with a 5 pound increase in weight per inch of height so a bitch that's 14 inches at the shoulder should weigh 24 pounds and a bitch that's 16 inches should weigh 34 pounds. If Sassy eventually exceeds the standard for height it's no big deal, just remember if she reaches a height of 17 inches she should weigh about 39 pounds. The most important thing is to keep her lean! Light in the loins is what your looking for. Staffords take two and a half to three years to fully develop and go through many strange incarnations in this period so don't panic. If you want to learn more about the breed I can recomend two books "Staffordshire Bull Terriers An Owner's Companion" by V.H. Pounds and Lilian V. Rant and "Celebrating Staffordshire Bull Terriers" by Steve Stone. I hope I've helped, talk to you later.
