thank you for the welcome how are you all today
You're very welcome. We're great thanks, it's Cooper's 1st birthday tomorrow so I'm getting a bit excited about giving him all of his pressies. It's been killing me having them sit there and trying not to give them too him
I keep telling my OH off when he mentions them or gets them out, can't spoil the surprise. I know... I'm sad
As for the toilet training, we were really lucky. The breeder we got Cooper did most of the work for us. We just made sure we took him outside straight after eating and as soon as he woke up and praised and rewarded him a lot when he went outside.
We also tried, if he was still awake, to take him out every hour so that we could try to catch him before he went inside. It seemed to work a treat he was pretty much toilet trained after a week or 2.
I know it can be pretty stressful though. We have friends with a West Highland Terrier that's not about 5-6mths old (I think) and he's still not toilet trained. Not sure I could cope with that...
Good luck.
If I can help with anything let me know. I'm happy to tell you how we suffered through it
My pleasure. I'm still leeching info from everyone on here. It's great talking to people who are or have been through the same stuff.
Cooper's recall is great. We started really early. We just kept calling him and getting him to run between the 2 of us. We started by giving him a treat everytime and then gradually reduced the amount. We still give him treats sometimes, but we've found it most effective, now that he knows what to do, to just do it occassionally. It keeps him guessing since he doesn't know if he'll get one this time or not.
We also used his fave toy. He's got a little squeaky footy that it's the best thing in the world to him. He'd do anything for it thankfully. The squeak is great for getting his attention when he's destracted too.
A lot of people I've spoken to have started the recall with the dog on the lead, to be honest we didn't really do it. We called him all the time around the house and yard and when we were out we'd have him on the lead with one holding it and the other person would call him and we'd let go as he ran toward them. We always did it in quiet spots though. Long leads work pretty well. We have one that we use now when we go to the beach and stuff and don't want him off lead.
hope he hasnt seen any of them or you have blown it, leah is now 14weeks old and still getting use to the house training ,, shes doing well its coming on . any tips ?
