I have 2 young male staffies,1 that is castrated and the other 1 will be asap.I read something the other day that worried me........is it true that you shouldn't keep 2 males together as they fight??????They do play aggressivley but i stop it before it gets too rough. Can anyone shed any light on this as i want to stop any problems before they may happen.Thanks.Sam

Hi Sam,

I have heard this, I was recommended to get the opposite sex as to what i had. I always keep mine seperated they would never be left alone togther, even when they are in the garden i have an open ear and an eye on them.

hello its not just a case of fighting its heirachy in the pack you should be at the top and your dogs will sought it out who is next you have to be careful if you leave them together when your not there because it can kick off over the smallest thing especially food or toys even if they get on really well. What i done with mine because Annie is very food orientainted i feed them at same time but different rooms they have the same toys but one each i never throw Annies toys to Roxy and visa versa and i do leave mine together but i take away all the toys and any thing i think they can squabble over so far after 2yrs all is realy well. When i come through door i always greet Annie first then a split second later i greet Roxy it isnt that i like annie more it just calms her down quicker and Roxy is so laid back she isnt bothered that i do this and it seems to work.

have the one thats not castrated done asap and be on top of there training and have them well socialized with other dogs.there right its just like having kids that have good days and bad days .As for being both males its all the same as 2females or one of each if they get along they get along iv found 2 females can be just as moody. there are alot of ppl on here that have more than 1or 2 dogs and it is hard work but its worth it.Im about to have a female dog stay with me for 2 weeks and i know our old female dog who is always moody all the time now wont cope so i'l be watching for all the signs of trub...you know your dogs so you will be able watch for those moments that dont feel right and head it of at the pass so to speak.
have your self prepared for if  things do go wrong so you will be able to handle it the right way the first time that way you wont make it worse.
Ito have gates allover the house but fingers crossed i have never had to seperate any dogs yet only the human kind..lol

Hi Sam, I have also heard that male dogs will fight at some stage.  A male will always be so patient with a female and males don't/rarely fight females. When I spoke to the KC they told me to keep dogs separated at all times when left alone, even a male and a female.  Now I am not sure whether two castrated males will fight?  I think as long as you keep them separated when left alone and watch them when they play rough they should be ok.  Sorry I can't help much

hi well i have 3 females and 1 male staff and touch wood ive had no problems,i also have a female cross breed and a male llhasa apso and again no problems,i think its like having kids you can have children that get on so well and others that want to rip each others heads off so i guess you have to take the rough with the smooth,i also seperate all my dogs at night except for cracker and lucy but lucy would not dare challenge cracker cus from day 1 he made it clear who the boss is,well lucy and betty do have grumps with each other but normally when 1 or both are in season, lucy and betty are both in control of lottie, so i agree with lynne just seperate when you are out,its better to be safe than sorry.i think dogs are like us one day they will be happy and the next grumpy so just treat them like us and just be aware that they could scuffle at some time its natural.give them both a kiss from me.lisa.x

Hi i was also advised that by two breeder's i was adviced to get a bitch cause 2 dogs would fight
But they can all fight,  so if i go out i do the same as lynne separate using
a stair gate and i always will seperate them when i go out..I like to be safer than sorry..
I would hate to think what could happen if there was no one there to stop them if a fight did break out
between the two of them..

Yes I've heard that to, thats why I opted for one of each. I can't advise further apart from saying whenever they are left alone, seperate them, I'd hate for you to come in to the unimaginable. I still seperate mine with a dog gate just to be sure.
