I use signals with sadie rather than spoken commands as she wont take food off children but the 2 youngest ones especially love to give her her treats so when they tell her to sit I give the signal and again when they tell her to take the treat, i am happy she wont take their sweeties and the kids think it's great that Sadie obeys them.

what a smart girl is your sadie, how wonderful that she still can be trained and trust you.

i train dog obedience and believe me its harder to teach the owners than the dogs. well done, it great to hear hand signals being used to well.

Hi Helga,

first rule out why nanook is begging. is he up to date with his worming? Also is he getting enough food? some dogs are so active the burn more energy and need more food.

if you have ruled out the first two reasons, then let see what we can do to stop him begging.

Putting him in the cage wont fix the problem, so lets not do that for now. When he begs for food is it when your having your own food? If so then one way to help is to feed him the same time as you have your dinner or tea.

If he still begs then  deepen your voice and growl, and at the same time grab him by the scruff of the neck, look him in the eyes and say NO! If he knows how to drop or down then put him in the drop/down position facing away from you, so he cannot see you eat. you could give him a rawhide chew .. if he doesn't know how to drop, then this is a good time to teach him.

If there is no food around and Nanook begs for food, i would  first check that he is getting enough food and that he has been wormed. It may be out of boredom, if this is the case then  give him  some rawhide chews, not the flat ones they can choke on them, i buy rolled or knotted raw hides. toys can be another distraction.

I hope this helps

Julie
