Warning as killer dog parasite found in Scotland
Posted On: 07/07/2008 21:28:41
hello i found this on another site

Jul 7 2008

A DOG-KILLING parasite has been found in Scotland for the first time, scientists said yesterday.
Angiostronglyus vasorum - or French heartworm - is carried by slugs and snails which have increased in number here because of warmer temperatures.
The University of Glasgow Vet School recently treated a one-year-old weimaraner which had the parasite.
Professor John Gilleard said: "It never left Glasgow so it had to have come into contact with it here."
Staff urged dog owners to be alert to the symptoms of infection, as dogs can make a full recovery if treated.
They include a cough, breathing difficulties and unexplained bleeding.

Thanks for this posting - Bettie actually eats snails.  I only know she's doing it when I hear the crunch!!!  Will have to keep an even closer eye on her.

Hi Kevin,  thanks for letting us know.  I am always on the alert for snails and slugs but it is very difficult to watch the doggies all the time.   Let's keep fingers crossed that this doesn't affect any of our dogs1
