A DOG-KILLING parasite has been found in Scotland for the first time, scientists said yesterday. Angiostronglyus vasorum - or French heartworm - is carried by slugs and snails which have increased in number here because of warmer temperatures. The University of Glasgow Vet School recently treated a one-year-old weimaraner which had the parasite. Professor John Gilleard said: "It never left Glasgow so it had to have come into contact with it here." Staff urged dog owners to be alert to the symptoms of infection, as dogs can make a full recovery if treated. They include a cough, breathing difficulties and unexplained bleeding.
