TIA RUNNING OFF!!
Posted On: 18/07/2008 08:30:36
EVERY NIGHT I TAKE TIA FOR A WALK ON THE LOCAL PARK ,ONCE WE'VE AWAY FROM THE ROAD I LET HER OF THE LEAD SO THAT SHE CAN HAVE A RUN AROUND AND PLAY. I'VE DONE THIS SINCE SHE WAS 11 WEEKS OLD WITH ME GIVING HER A TREAT ON HER COMING BACK TO ME . THIS HAS BEEN WORKING .PANIC.LAST NIGHT WE WALKED AROUND THE PARK AND WHEN I CALLED HER TO COME TO ME TO GET HER BACK ON THE LEAD SHE DID UNTIL SHE PICKED UP A STICK TURNED AWAY FROM ME AND STARTED TO WALK TOWARDS THE ROAD I KNOW THAT SHE WAS GOING TO MAKE HER WAY HOME .PANIC.I CALLED HER A FEW TIMES AND STILL SHE WALKED OFF, I SAT ON A BENCH TO SEE IF SHE WOULD COME  BACK AND NO SHE DIDN'T.LUCKY ENOUGH A LADY AND HER LAB CAME ON THE PARK AND TIA STARTED TO PLAY WITH THE DOG AND SHE VERY KINDLY GOT HOLD OF TIA'S COLLAR.I CAN'T TAKE HER PUPPY TRAINING AS THERE IS NO ONE LOCAL AND I DON'T DRIVE ,DO I KEEP TIA ON THE LEAD IN FUTUREXX

hello another thing i was told at training if they take a long time to come back do not show your anger just bite your tongue and praise because if your punish when they do finally come back they think they are being told off for coming back

a big thanks to everyone for all their advice on the running off matter .i still take tia off her lead but i've been calling her back to me more often, praise and give more treats  and off she goes, but i dont let her go to far in front ,if i think shes going to far i call her back and touch wood shes coming back.but i dont let her pick up any skicks because thats when she gets it in her head to carry on walking.i also have been putting her back on her lead for short spaces of time ,once again a big thanks for all the  advicce on this love maxine and tia xx

good tip if dog ont ome back is to make it a game, shout name or whistle and stat running in  the opposite direction to what they are going, they will come running to join in the fun. Do you always put thelead on when you cal her back ?she may know that is what is going to happen and does not want it. Trycaling her a few times when she is playing, make a fuss of her but dont put her lead on so she doesnt think her fun is going to end if she comes to you. You can get a long line to attach to her coller so she cannot take off until you are 100% sure she will come back. I know from experience how devistating it is to loose a dog who is hit by a car. My 4month  old staffy did just that, he ran home on his own while my hubby was putting the other dogs lead on, he didnt make  across the road A long line would have prevented that. good luck

Like Lisa said i have lead on the grass before and lilia couldnt get back quick enough. Another thing that was suggested to me is jump up and down waving your arms and making a noise.  Good Luck.

hi ive read and seen on the tv on its me or the dog that the lady who trains the dogs called victoria she lay on the floor and played dead and that worked cus the dogs will be curious why their owner is lieing still and should come back to see if you're ok,i know it would be embarrasssing but id rather be embarrassed than lose my dog in a traffic accident, also how about an extended lead for a heavy dog as staffies are so strong its just an idea, good luck on the noxt walk.lisa.x

Hi, another little trick you could try if she is interested in something else is to flap your arms around, make silly noises and walk AWAY from her - it works for me eveytime cause he thinks what I am doing is far more fun! You dont half feel a fool, but hey who the hell cares! LOL
And something else, if you just put the lead on to go home they might start thinking oh no shes got the lead, I'm off - confuse them by calling her to you , put on lead, treat and praise, then let her off again, several times during your walk. Good luck xx

Hi Maxine,  I bet you were scared! Harley is 8 months and I take him to training and some times he will completely ignored me when I asked him to come to me in the park.  Muffin is even worse but she hasn't been to training yet. This morning she run off after a cyclist!!  If you can't take Tia training maybe you can buy a book on puppy training and try to teach her at home?   I am sure Tia enjoys running in the park off the lead, it would be a shame to have her on the lead always.  Try the book and teach her at home.  After what Muffin did today and Harley not obeying me all the time I intend to spend 30 a day training them in the garden.   Good luck Maxine  x
