ADVISE ON 2 DOGS
Posted On: 01/09/2008 12:02:51
To all of you that has 2 or more dogs .As you will know we have Tia how is 6 months old and she is so good that i want another staff but my heart is saying yes,my head is saying no .I've had some good advise from lynne but just wanted to know others thoughts on the matter,i've a lot of questions running around like what if Tia doesn't like the new dog,do i have a girl or boy ,when i go out and have to leave them do i leave them in the same room ,i'm a stay at home mum so really the only time would be bedtime .This might seem a silly question does it really matter if a dog has papers or not.My main concern is if they wouldn't get on .As much as we love our dogs do you some times wish you never had that 2 nd dog. Please feel free to leave any advise i'll take it all on board, many thanks maxine

Hi Maxine, thank you for inviting me as your "friend" which i gladly accept.I have 2 staffs(brothers) called Flash&Stumps..the other staff you see in my profile pic is my ex partners(He's called Max).Ive had Flash&Stumps since they were 8 weeks old(no papers)and they are 2 of the most friendly dogs you could ever meet..they never fight, even before i had them neuterd about 6 months ago, they had never fought, they do play fight with each other on a daily basis, but its never true agression. When Max was introduced to them as a 3month old pup they all got on fine..but as Max grew and got bigger and older,he started to become more dominant towards Flash&Stumps to the point where he and Stumps had 2 major fights, but in saying that, once the fight was ended they acted as if nothing had happened and 5mins later they would be playing with each other, best of friends. We never kept them seperated at night as they never showed any agression toward each other then, and both fights ocurred during the day while thier were people around.I think as a staffie owner you can pick up what kind of temprement your dog has from an early age,i had always said to my ex partner that Max had that bit of an edge about him, even as a pup i could see it,and i was proved right, altho my ex partner would disagree im sure,as it was "her" baby.So all i can say is if you do decide to get another staff, just pay close attention to its manerisms, you can usually see what kind of temprement it has fairly quickly,me personally..i wouldnt introduce a new dog into another dogs domain, its a recipe for trouble, but i'm sure their will be plenyty of owners who would beg to differ,as i say, thats my personal opinion...oh and just for the record,i would always have 2 dogs rather than just 1,but id get them as pups together, you can train 2 as easy as 1 and they are great company for each other.

morning billy, thanks for your advice on having a new dog my other half has said i can't have 1 now that tia is getting older.he said if i had said something at the time of getting tia we could of had 2 then .take care maxine x

i had 3 staffs - prince ruby and tia. loved them so much! 2 bitches ruby and tia started a fight 3 weeks ago and tia is dead. totally devastated. she was bitten on main artery on her leg. cant put into words how i feel. all 3 dogs grew up together. never fought or no sign of jealousy between them. cant bring myself to do anything with other 2 as heart is broke - hard to look out at 2 dogs where there should be 3. rubys face is destroyed in scars and her legs as well, there isnt a mark on prince. my fella is doing everything with them but i know in my hearts that it will take me a lot longer to get over! RSPCA were involved and she said it was only natural what happened that 2 bitches will fight for dominance same as 2 dogs will. i wouldnt wish this on anyone!!!

I have 2 staffs and a yorkie cross. I had two yorkie crosses untill one died inFeb and 2 staffs at the one time. I find having two dogs or more is great, I dont think I would go back to having one dog on its own I think it does them good to have another member of the same  species to play with. I had 2 dog cages and seperated the staffies when I went out and at night. they are both close together so they can see each other so stil have the company. they still like to gointo their cages now when I lift my coat they both trot in to their cage and go to sleep till I come back  its magic

hi maxine, we got ty when he was 10 months old without any papers and he is soft as anything, our neighbours talked us into getting another dog so we trailed around all the cat and dog shelters looking for another baby, but unfortunately we couldn't find a female that got on with ty as they all turned on him when they met him, so we decided to look for a girl  who was about 6 months and in the paper that week was just what we were looking for, we introduced her to ty and they got on like a house on fire and we had nothing to worry about, they are so much fun and keep each other entertained and then along came puppies !!!!
I would go for it if you really want another as it is very rewarding, keep me updated on what you decide x x

Hi Maxine, still pondering lol I think its all in the introduction to each other, personally. The only time I find it difficult is off lead on the beach - but only because Toby only brings his first ball back half ay, then drops it waiting for me to throw his second ball. So I'm keeping an eye on the two balls and their whereabouts, and now I have Venus who has her own ball, just short distances while she gets the hang of fetching the ball, so I have 3 balls to keep tabs on lol Good luck with your decision hun and let us know what you decide

Hi,

I have Morgan who is 3 and Marley who is 7 months. All i can say to you is you have to consider everything down to the cost of having another puppy, insurance, vet bills but mostly the time and commitment it takes in having 2 espically when you have a family too.

I am a stay at home mum and although i would never not have my 2 furbabies I do find it hard at times now that i have Marley aswell.

Good Luck with whatever you decide xxxx

hi,well i have 1 adult male satff whos nearly 4yrs old, lucy is a 20 month old staff, bettyis a 16 month ols staff, lottie is a 18wk ol staff and lucys daughter and finally dudley who also is 18 wks old and lucys son, well i can honestly say that ive had very little problems at all and theres maybe been 2/3 scuffles but not a real fight just a tiff that lasted 10 seconds but do all adult humans get along?no so id just get either a neutered boy or a nice little girl cus its unbelieveable how they all get on with each other and share everything, you also see that tia is more happy having a play friend that looks like herself lol.its great having more than one dog and its not any harder than 1 just a bit harder on your pockets lol,i love every minute with my mad lot and so just go for it but im not sure what others think but crackers got no papers and hes the most lovely natured big boy but the rest of the dogs/pups are from exceptioal backgrounds and are equally as sweet natured as cracker,so to have papers or not is just what you can afford and if you're considering breeding.good luck in your decision.ttfn.lisa.x
