police and (pit type breeds)
Posted On: 07/06/2008 16:40:25
hi every one,
my friend jan has just recently signed up on the site!!
her dogs name is scrappy, while she was out walking her dog the police stopped her asking her what type of dog it was, (replying a staffy),the officer turned round and said thats no staff he's to big, it looks like a pit!!and followed by saying if we hear it is being used for fighting or has showed any forms of aggresson towards dogs or people that will be it!!!Then the officer took the dog from her walked with him and handled him within a manner to see if he would bite!!the officer returned the dog and went on his way,
Now what i wanted to know as any body else had to go through this, and are the police allowed to do this to anyone who owns a long legged staff.
i was wondering if she would be able to lodge a complaint against the officer, cause to me it looks like he was having a bad morning and took it out on jan and her dog!!!
it has upset jan and now she is scared to walk him thinking she will have him taken off her.
can any one help with any advice on this matter,
pam xxx

I would complain to the station of the officer in question to be honest as in Australia the gentlmen would have needed you permission to take the dog from your person even if it was just a few feet. Now what surprises me is what would the Fu"khead have done if as was suggested he was handling the dog in a manner to illicit a choosen repsonse...I think he was quite comfortable with the dog. In the manner that he would was sure that he would be unharmed....as you know  your push any animal irrespective of what sort it will reach it's breaking point. My laboured point is I would contact the police and mention to them was it there policy to enrage an animal to bite,  then I pursue the conversation accordingly..even mentioning that Jan is now not comfortable walking the dog...etc etc...

OMG Pam, Your poor friend i have never heard of this. How could a police officer be like that?? Grrr makes me mad. I would advise Jan to at least enquire at her local police station as to weather this is normal practise.

Send her our love and tell her to hold her head up high when she is walking Scrappy.

Poor Jan, What gives the stupid officer the right to take her dog off her and try to provoke it into doing something which is what he was trying to do. Dogs sense aggression and it could well have reacted as any dog would. I would get in touch with your 'wonderful' (sarcastic use of the word) community officer who still hasnt done anything about Les's bite and ask him whats going on? If i was on my own (which i am 99% of the time) quietly walking my dog and someone done that to me i'd be concerned too - bet they wouldn't have done it if she had a man with her. Id ring the police station and confront them. Send Jan my regards - thats just awful. Problem is most police officer dont think they are the law they think there above it - assholes!

Everyone that is having probs with the 'nasty staffy' stigma seems to be coming from england. I'm apalled that the country that 'made'this breed are so intolerant of it. Of all the people the english should know what the dog is like. I feel that the cop overstepped the mark. I would make enquires further.

hi pam,i can't believe he was so stupid and ignorant id like to see sum copper try and even touch my dog cause id take it well furthur and yes thats not allowed cus unless there has been sum complaint and a description of a dog that has attacked then he should explain that in detail,if anyone even tried to approach me in that bossy manner id warn the copper come any nearer and the dog will protect me,what a total nob, give some people a uniform and they think they're god.lisa.

This sounds appalling to me. I'm no expert on the law but it does sound like he overstepped the line. I've emailed a niece of mine who is a policewoman to get her opinion. Maybe we have a policeman on the site who could answer this for you, if no one is sure I will let you know what she says as soon as I hear back from her.

i own a short legged staff (and of course a puppy) but i've had the police hassle me like this i think is cos im young they even said if i couldn't prove the breed of the dog and that she wasn't agressive then they were going to take her away from me...i went and got my kc paper's that proved without a doubt that Suki is a pure stafford and they still said they was going to impound my dog as they've had reports that she's been attacking other dogs!!! this was a load of bull and anyone who was met or seen suki know's she a staff and a big softy at that point i took the lead off the copper and told to go get a fucking dog unit and some armed police cos the only way there taking her off me is when i'm cold in the ground!!!!
