Dogs sleeping arrangements
Posted On: 10/07/2008 15:50:45
Hi All, I'm just interested in where you let you dog sleep at night. At the moment Lilia is in a cage in the kitchen but every morning she starts barking at about 4 o'clock. Last night i left her cage with the door open so she could have the run of the kitchen and conservatory but she still barked. On a Saturday night i tend to sleep on the sofa with her and she doesnt wake up until i do. I cant move the cage upstairs cos theres not enough room! i wouldnt mind her coming on the bed with me but as she was trying to be dominant as a pup i wouldnt want her to go back to these ways. Can anyone share their experiences with me. Thanks. Di x

Hi,
Bell sleeps on her bed in our room until about 1.00am.  Then she puts her paws next to my side of the bed and asks to come in, if I dont respond she goes to Lee's side and asks.  If we dont respond she thinks oh well I'll just get in anyway!  I have recently got her a hot water bottle to encourage her to stay in her bed a little longer and it has worked, she stays there for an extra hour (wow).  We dont mind her coming in for midnight snuggles, I just have to wash my bedding more.  I love to snuggle up with her!
Yeah as im on my own i like to have the cuddles with her too. I think she will have the run of the house when she stops chewing.

hi di,
skye sleeps in a crate in the lounge and she seems happy with this, i know what you mean about the early mornings but she only wakes up when carls alarm goes off in the morning and he works 6 days a week, but on sunday she will start howling between 5.30-6.00am which is time  carl wakes up on the other days, so i guess its just what she is used too.  like you sometimes i sleep on the sofa as carl snores,  if i go into the lounge she will wake up no matter what time, so i let her sleep with me on the sofa and like you say she will not wake up until i do.
you need to do whatever you feel comfortable with hun. chantal xxx
Hi Chantal, once the chewings stopped i think she will have the run of house. Lets hope im not completely grey and haggered by then!

Lots of people think if you let your dog on your bed you might make your dog more dominate! Which is not true, let  her to sleep with you Just keep your room of bounds during the day You will find her to be a happier dog. When you sleep on the sofa, she sleep well and wakes up when you do, she will be the same on your bed, trust me.

Stafford's are not a dog that like to be alone, that's why they are called people dogs. And dogs are pack animal's and live together and sleep together, Lilia is lonely that's why she barks.

Thanks Julie, she will have more freedom when she can be trusted not too chew - shes getting there already. I think the bedroom will be the next move. Its nice for me to have something with me.

Hi di..

Floyd has 4 choices to where he wants to sleep..lol... in winter time he has a snugger bed in my leopard room & he has my leopard sofa. In summer Floyd has a raised bed in the garage & a raised bed outside under the stars, when the temps are over 30c i take Floyd inside with aircon on as its a bit too warm to let him sleep outside under the stars. Not one of my staffords have ever been crated, they have free roam of the house..

PS im in OZ & summer is hot..lol

Cheers Deb, lucky old you in oz i love the sun. Lilias only in a cage at the moment cos she would chew my house to bits otherwise. Once she can be trusted she will have the run of the house. I am really tempted to have her upstairs with me but she is into everything so i got to get her used to it first. Thanks for your reply - much appreciated. Di x

Hi Di,
My two pups sleep downstairs in a crate each.  One in the kitchen the other in the lounge.  Harley is as good as gold but little Muffin will howl as soon as she hears me walking around upstairs at 5 pm.  Other than that they are good.  Try to put some background sound like quiet music.  Also what time do they go to bed?  Maybe if she stays up a little longer at night then she will be so tired that she will get up later?  HOpe this helps
Thanks - she goes to bed as good as gold and i dont hear a peep out of her until the early hours of the morning . I stay up as late as i can usually about 11 - 11.30 which is late enough for me as i get up at 5! i think its just a habit.
