Pig poo slurry pit Part 2
Posted On: 29/07/2008 18:13:15
Following my last blog regarding Lilias great escape heres an update. I saw the farmer who owns the field today. He said they had put a new fence and gate around this pit - which they had - unfortunately the gate was too high off the ground to stop Lilia. Anyway I explained what had happened and then i got a huge shock. I thought the pit was about 6 foot deep but he told me it was actually big enough that if a tractor went in it would not fill it. He also said that we were lucky that the poo had formed some kind of thin crust otherwise Lilia would have gone straight under.  Now I know it all turned out ok in the end but i cant stop thinking what could have happened. Its not been a great day

Cheers Lisa, would cuddle her but she still stinks! She rolled in some the other day and even after a wash you could smell it and when she got wet it was unbearable so you can imagine how pongy she is after being belly deep in it - nice!

Di that sounds like a septic tank, and should be covered and fenced off!  Mum had one in the field behind where she used to live, but it wasnt fenced properly and the top was very unstable. The farmer that owned the field let it out to local farmers, and one day a cow half fell in, it was just as well that some of the wall of the tank had gone and the cow got a foothold otherwise it would have been a gonna!  They got someone involved (not sure if it was environmental health) and they made the farmer make the walls good, make sure it had a safe top on it, and secure fencing around it. Just as well Lilia got out without you having to go in after her!
