After having read a recent blog titled ‘Castrasted or not?’ and all the responses favouring castration I have began to wonder whether I am doing the right thing by not having Harley (11 months) done. Over the last few days I have asked several vets and read a lot of information about it on the web and everything seems to point me to the same….. have him done. My OH is very happy for this to happen but I am not so happy (I don’t know why). I would only do it for health reasons cos Harley is not a boisterous dog, but I have noticed over the last few weeks that he’s been a bit moody, not eating properly and trying to hump my legs and arms lol. He goes like this on and off. The vets I have spoken to say that he will be a lot happier without all the hormones turmoil. Harley has been booked to get done a week from Monday and I am asking for anyone in the club please to convince me not to have him done, one good reason and I will cancel appointment. Thank you. Do I Go Home Today?
My family brought me home, cradled in their arms The cuddled me and smiled at me, said I was full of charm They played with me and laughed with me and showered me with toys I sure do love my family - especially the girls and boys The children loved to feed me - they gave me special treats They even let me sleep with them - all snuggled in the sheets I used to go for lots of walks - often several times a day They even fought to hold the leash - Im very proud to say These are the things I'll not forget - a cherished memory Because I now live in the pound - without my family
They used to laugh and praise me when I played with that old shoe But I didn't know the difference between the old ones and the new The kids and I would grab a rag, for hours we would tug So I thought I did the right thing when I chewed the bedroom rug They said I was out of control and would have to live outside This I did not understand although I tried and tried The walks all stopped just one by one, they said they hadn't time I wish I could change things, I wish I knew my crime My life became so lonely, in the back yard on a chain
I barked and barked all day long - just to keep from going insane So they brought me to the shelter but were embarrased to say why They say I caused an allergy - then they each kissed me 'goodbye' If I'd only had some classes when I was just a pup Then I would have been a better dog when I was all grown up 'You only have one day left' - I heard the worker say Does that mean I have a second chance? Do I Go Home Today?
From a Stafford in the pound
TO: GOD FROM: THE DOG
Dear God: Why do humans smell the flowers, but seldom, if ever, smell one another?
Dear God: When we get to heaven, can we sit on your couch? Or is it still the same old story?
Dear God: Why are there cars named after the jaguar, the cougar, the mustang, the colt, the stingray, and the rabbit, but not ONE named for a dog? How often do you see a cougar riding around? We do love a nice ride! Would it be so hard to rename the 'Chrysler Eagle' the ' Chrysler Beagle'?
Dear God: If a dog barks his head off in the forest and no human hears him, is he still a bad dog?
Dear God: We dogs can understand human verbal instructions, hand signals, whistles, horns, clickers, beepers, scent ID's, electromagnetic energy fields, and Frisbee flight paths. What do humans understand?
Dear God: More meatballs, less spaghetti, please.
Dear God: Are there mailmen in Heaven? If there are, will I have to apologize? Dear God: Let me give you a list of just some of the things I must re member to be a good dog. 1. I will not eat the cats' food before they eat it or after they throw it up.
2. I will not roll on dead seagulls, fish, crabs, etc., just because I like the way they smell.
3. The Litter Box is not a cookie jar.
4. The sofa is not a 'face towel'.
5. The garbage collector is not stealing our stuff.
6. I will not play tug-of-war with Dad's underwear when he's on the toilet.
7. Sticking my nose into someone's crotch is an unacceptable way of saying 'hello'.
8. I don't need to suddenly stand straight up when I'm under the coffee table .
9. I must shake the rainwater out of my fur before entering the house - not after.
10. I will not come in from outside and immediately drag my butt.
11. I will not sit in the middle of the living room and lick my crotch.
12. The cat is not a 'squeaky toy' so when I play with him and he makes that noise, it's usually not a good thing.
P.S. Dear God: When I get to Heaven may I have my testicles back?
We have had such bad news lately with our beloved Staffords on our walkies that I thought I would share my latest experience with you people. Yesterday evening I was walking my pups all happily when I saw this young girl with her eyes fixed on my pups. My first reaction was to tighten my dogs’ leads until I saw this girl’s smile. She asked me if she could play with the dogs and I warned her that they were a bit excitable and might jump, she said she didn’t mind that she had a Stafford herself! It was lovely to see harley and muffin playing with this girl, they were jumping, wagging their tails, rolling on the floor, licking. I don’t know how it happened but suddenly there were 5 or 6 more kids all playing with the dogs. It was lovely to see this. When I finally managed to drag them away we continued our walk with harley and muffin wagging their tails happily. I would have been wagging my tail as well if I had had one lol. That is how happy I was J. Five minutes later I met this other woman who also asked permission to play with harley and muffin. I said of course but I warned her about them getting excited. She said she didn’t mind that she had a Stafford herself! OMG they started playing and jumping and I got all tangled up with the extension leads. Ah! this reminds me abt the blog from some days ago. If you get an extension lead get the tape type one not the string type. Harley almost had my legs chopped off!! Ouch! After talking about staffords for a while and how wonderful these dogs were we continued our walk all happy and smiley J J J Anyway, I thought I would share this with you lot. There are loads of nice people out there who adore staffords just like us! Good stuff! J x
I take my puppies to the park at 6.30 in the morning everyday to avoid people with kids or too many dogs so I am able to let them off the lead and I am also able to do some recall exercises with them. This morning we were walking along happily when out of the blue a jogger came out of some trees quite suddenly. I was just about to grab little muffin (my girl) when she started running towards the runner to play. I called her but she just wanted to play. I couldn’t believe my eyes when this guy began to shout at my dog and was trying to kick her!!!! Muffin thought this one great fun and continued jumping about. Harley was next to me not moving. When I saw his intention to hurt my girl I went ballistic! Nobody hurts my girl and I told him that. He started saying that she could bite and told him that she was a puppy!! Then he went on to have a go at me by saying things like: ‘what? Say that in english’. Because of my accent he thought I was from Poland and after calling me a few names he told me to go back to my country!! I was absolutely astonished by this man behaviour. Having a go at my girl and then that vicious attack on me!! I did give him a piece of my mind though. For those that don’t know this country has had a massive influx of eastern Europeans especially from Poland. This guy thought I was from Poland and decided to have a go. I would like to remind this guy and people who are as racist as him that Polish people come here to work and they are very hard working people. I am Spanish and have been here for the last 10 years and have worked every single day of it paying my taxes to pay the huge number of single English mothers and people on the dole!. I am very angry today, very angry that my dogs and myself have to go through this experience. It is shameful!! God knows what I would have done if he had touched my girl. One thing is clear THE MORE I KNOW PEOPLE THE MORE I LOVE MY DOGS, MY STAFFIES!! I am just relieved that I only cried when the jogger left and not when he was there!
Hi All,I wonder whether you can give me some advice. As some of you probably know I have a 3.5 month old female staffy (Muffin). I also have a 7 month old male staffy (Harley). I don’t have any intention to breed them and for that reason I am getting Muffin done, (waiting to see how Harley develops when he is 1 year old before I decide to get him done or not). The vet recommended that she should be done a month or two after her first season. So I have two issues: 1. – For those of you who have a female staffy, at what age did she come into season the first time? How long does the season last? How can you predict when she is going to come into season? The second issue is that I will have to keep my dogs separated for the length of the season, which is going to be such a nightmare, I am really dreading it. For those of you who have gone through this situation, could you advice me on how you dealt with it? I don’t have family in England so I will not be able to keep them in different houses. Thank you all
Hi All, I just wanted to share my experience I had with my puppies yesterday. I took them for a nice walk yesterday and we passed some river, I never thought they would get in the water being so young. But they did! However, they didn't know how deep it was going to be so suddenly they both stepped into the water and they dissapeared!!! I got so frightened! I was just going to get into the water when I se these two beautiful faces swimming to the surface. I was so relief. I got so scared! and almost cried! Them however, seemed to have a wonderful time cos they went in again!! Anyway, that was the hightlight of my weekend! Hope you all had a good one!
Hi All, Over the last month or two I have noticed that little Harley ( 7 months) has become a bit fussy with his food. I have always fed with dry food except for a couple of weeks when I fed him canned food (that’s when we brought Muffin into the house). If I put dry food for him he will just not eat it. I have tried it with warm water, dog gravy, marmite, etc… nothing works. I even started feeding him by hand but that stopped working too. He does eat when he is very hungry but just small amounts (no near enough what he should be eating at his age). I took him to the vet and Harley is as healthy as a cricket. The vet told me to put a bit of turkey mince on top of his dry food. I did and then he just ate the mince and not the dry food! So I am now putting more meat and mixing it with dry food and he seems he is eating ok but I am conscious that by giving him mince he is eating an imbalance diet. I have tried all sorts of dry food brands, from pedigree to Hill’s science. Loads of people have told me that I worry too much and that I should put down his food for 20 minutes and if he doesn’t eat it to take it away, but that doesn’t work for me. I hate it when he doesn’t eat. What do you feed your dogs? I am tempted to try homemade cooking for Harley but then I am not sure whether I will be able to keep up with it for the rest of his life! Also I have Muffin and she eats her dry food really well (in fact she would eat anything!). I actually thought that maybe Harley was a bit jealous of Muffin but I can’t see that cos I love them both the same and show it to them in equal amount. Can anyone give me some advice please? Thank you!
